How It Works

How to turn a baby tooth gold.

You turn a baby tooth gold by holding it with the tweezers, coloring it with the gold marker, letting it dry, and putting it in the vial with a dated label. An adult does every step, and the whole thing takes about five minutes plus drying time.

Before you start

  • An adult performs every step. The kit is not a toy.
  • Work on a clean flat surface with a paper towel. Wash your hands.
  • Keep the kit, marker, dust and vial away from children under 3 and from pets.

This is a keepsake kit. It does not treat, clean, or preserve teeth, and it is not a dental product. Full safety information is on the instruction card and at Safety.

What you need that is not in the kit

A clean flat surface, a paper towel, a pen for the sticker, and soap and water.

The six steps

  1. Clean the tooth

Rinse the tooth under running water and pat it dry with a clean paper towel. Let it air dry until no moisture is visible.

  2. Hold it with the tweezers

Grip the tooth by the root end so the crown is free to color. Hold it over the paper towel.

  3. Color it gold

Use the gold marker in slow, even strokes. Turn the tooth with the tweezers and cover every side you can reach.

  4. Let it dry

Leave the tooth on the paper towel until it is dry to the touch. Do not handle it while the color is wet. If a spot looks thin, add a second coat after the first is dry.

  5. Put it in the vial and label it

Place the dry tooth in the glass vial and press in the cork. Write your child's name and the date on a sticker and put it on the vial.

  6. Leave the gold dust trail

Sprinkle a small pinch of gold dust on a windowsill or a tray, away from the bed. Close the packet and keep it out of reach. Wipe up the dust in the morning.

Add every tooth.

The vial is large enough for all of your child's baby teeth. Each time a tooth comes out, repeat the steps and add a new date to the label. By the time the last baby tooth is gone, you have one small vial that holds every one.

Tips from parents who have done it

  • Do the gilding after bedtime. It is calmer, and the surprise lands better.
  • Keep the tweezers and marker in the kit box so you can find them at 9:40 p.m.
  • Write the story on the sticker too: "Bit an apple. Left front. Age 6."
  • If your child is awake and wants to watch, let them sit at a safe distance. An adult still does the work.
  • If the tooth is stained or looks damaged, you can still color it. If you are unsure whether a tooth came out normally, ask your dentist.
